Pegasus Urban Design was brought into to work on this new residential development scheme following the purchase of the site with outline planning permission granted in 2006. This meant that the developer was not a part of the public consultation process however the architectural response does aim to take a strong design cue from the traditional vernacular of Melbourne Town Centre in order to provide sympathetic and seamless expansion of the existing housing stock within the town.
The scheme was designed to provide a range of 1 to 5 bedroom dwellings as well as affordable housing, increasing the range, type and tenure of properties available for local residents, thereby allowing members of the local community to move house as their needs and / or demographic circumstances change over time.
The proposals include an area of public open space in the south of the site, which will benefit both new and existing residents, and will increase the overall permeability of the area for pedestrians and cyclists, by connecting to the existing footpath network along the eastern site boundary and beyond to the north and east of the site. By retaining existing vegetation and creating an environment which both responds to and reflects the centre of Melbourne, the development at Millbrook will provide a high-quality, attractive environment for both residents and visitors passing through.
The design approach uses the traditional detailing of buildings found in the area to produce a site specific development of 130 houses. The Design Statement for the site uses the Building For Life Criteria as commended by CABE (Government Commission for Architecture and Built Environment). The Pegasus Design Statement was recently used as an exemplar at CABE BFL workshops.
